REST DAY IN ZELLERTAL
We had a wonderful stay at the home of Frau Rinnerberger. Our room
and bed were very comfortable. The scenery from our deck was awesome.
At breakfast in the morning we met Frau Rinnerberger’s son, Norbert, who
is an accountant. He speaks very good English and we had a good time
talking to him. We gave him our card so he could check out our website.
During the day we took the little steam train into Mayrsburg. This
turned out to be a big tourist town. There are many ski areas and lots
of trams to top of the mountainsides. I checked every shop up and down
the street for a dress for Isabella, and I saw some really cute ones for
$250. I will keep looking.
When we got back to our zimmer we took a rest and then hiked to the top of
the hill where there is a chapel and a great view of the village. Our
location is so good. It is very quiet, our room is reasonable, and
we are close to everything.
In the afternoon I had a chat with Norbert and he had checked out our website
and had lots of questions. We had a good talk about life in Sunnyvale
and life in Strass. Very different.
In the evening we went down the road for dinner and I had a great dinner
of 3! Lamb chops with excellent green beans and potato pancakes, all for
only $10. It does not seem to matter what we order for a meal, lunch
or dinner, the cost is always about $25, including drinks. It has become
a bit of a joke between us. We can hardly wait to see the bill to see
how close we are to $25. Invariably we are within 50 cents plus or
minus.
Tuesday morning we got packed up, had our breakfast and another visit with
Norbert. He comes over to his parent’s house every day to work on the
farm before he goes to his job as accounting manager. He is off work
this week. He had printed out several pages from our website to show
his parents. He was quite interested in our vacation home in Truckee
and had lots of questions about our life, our travels, etc. We told
him more than he probably wanted to know as we munched our yummy breakfast.
When it was time to leave we showed Mr. and Mrs. Rinnerberger and
Norbert how our bikes fit into the cases, and had our picture taken all together.
They presented us with a beautiful beer stein depicting important landmarks
of Stass am Zell. Now we have two beautiful steins as momentos of our
vist to Germany and Austria. What nice people they are!
Finally we headed down the road and on to new Austrian adventures.
The radweg is
quite good along this stretch. We followed the river on
good bike paths into Rattenburg. Rattenburg is an old town that was
built in 1148 and still remains, with a wall and gate to get in, and old
houses and of course tourist shops. We stopped there to visit and see
the town, and then on the road again, through farms and fields.
Sadly, we had a mishap along the way. I was going to take a photo of
Don riding along the cornfield with the church in the background and the
green hills and blue sky. As I was standing there, getting aimed, Don
took off on his bike and his trailer hit the back of my leg and I fell over
and dropped his beloved camera. Oh, I felt so bad! On the other
hand, I didn’t break any bones. Well, the camera is broken and will
take no more pictures until it is repaired. We are both so sad.
Here's a picture with the broken camera.
We continued along the route at record speed (because we didn’t have to stop
to take any pictures) until we got to
Kurfstein. As we were riding into the city, what did we
spy?!? One of the only electronics shops we have seen in Austria, Data
World - Ecotec Computer GmbH. Don was able to buy a new little digital
camera. Not as good as the one he has, but good enough to finish the
trip. So now he is happier and I don’t feel so bad. Philipp Haidl
spoke excellent English and Don was able to tell him the sad tale of what
had happened and the clerk even gave us a “broken camera discount” of $25.
Don will send his broken camera in for repairs when we get home and in the
meanwhile he can use his new Olympus Camedia.
The camera salesman told us where we could go to an internet café
where we can download our reports, so we
headed there next. After an hour of computer stuff we visited
the “old town” of Kufstein, where I again checked shops for a Tyrolean dress.
By the time we finished it was almost 4pm, so we rode out of town 5 miles
and arranged a room for the night.
In another few miles we will be back in Germany. In fact, Germany is
just across the river. We go back into Germany for a few days, and
then back in Austria. We are lucking out with the weather. The
weather predictions are for rain, but so far we have had some cloudy days,
but no rain.
We had a nice email from the Akers. The are home in Augsburg again.
They said this was the best exchange they have had and they really enjoyed
both the cabin and the Sunnyvale house. I am so happy they had a good
time. It is nice when an exchange works out so well and everyone feels
that they had a good arrangement.
